2nd to last week

This week we have been busy doing lots of different things.
One of the best parts of the week was watching Year 2's performance of Maui Catches the Sun. We liked lots of different things in the play but our favourite parts were the Hakka and when the sun got caught.


We have also done poetry in English and some problem solving in Maths.
We visited Maple class for the morning and we wrote questions to ask the Year 2 children. 3 children came to our class and answered some.


Next week we will be busy getting ready to finish Year 1.

Sharing Assembly

This week we have been practicing our sharing assembly and we did it this morning. At the beginning of the week we all decided what we wanted to say. Then we practiced our lines so that we could say them independently. We also chose 4 songs to sing. 3 song were about recycling and 1 song was about Summer.
We hope you enjoyed our assembly.
It has been a busy Friday with Picnic lunch and rocket lollies next to the paddling pool.

Busy week

In English we have been writing a character description about Jim. We wrote about his appearance, personality and likes and dislikes.


Last week it was Sports Day. In the Infants Green team won. In the Juniors the Blue team won so the overall winners were Blue team.


This week in Maths we have been recapping lots of knowledge. We described 3d shapes, we made times on a clock.


Topic work has moved on to Space. This week we wrote all the facts that we knew.


The Air Ambulance landed on the school field because we raised money for it through the fun run. After it landed we made paper helicopters. They are called a sycamore seed helicopter.

Conservation

In PSHE this week we learnt about conservation and how to help animals in our world. We have also learnt how to add and subtract quickly using a hundred square. In RE we have been learning about Jonah and the Whale. We spoke about the ,meaning of the story and why events happen.

May Day Celebrations

Over the last few weeks we were busy practicing our May Day Dance and we managed to learn it so well that we performed it yesterday and today! For the dance we were in a group of 8. Our May King and Queen was Lucy and Leo. We dressed up in smart clothes and we performed in front of all the adults. 


In Topic we have been building tall towers and structures. We found out that you had to build a big base and you add 2 sides to make it stable. We also found out that the bottom can be bigger than the top. Triangles are really strong to help structures be stable. We wrote how to make a structure and this is called an explanation. An explanation is a small piece of writing that describes how to do it.


In Maths we have also learnt about 3D shapes. The Maths words that you use to describe a 3d shape is faces, vertices and edges.

Journey Week

This week in Maths we have been learning to find half. We learnt how to find half of an object. Half means there is 2 groups and it has to be the exactly the same size. We also found half of a number. 1/2 of 8 is 4. Some of us also learnt about a quarter.


In English we have been writing the story Journey. Some of us are half way through writing the story. First we put pictures in then we wrote it. We named the character Anna and the boy Ben. To start with we wrote the beginning then the middle and finally we wrote the end.


In computing we have been practicing our keyboard skills. We know that we have to use all our fingers to type. We always place our fingers on the middle row. We use our thumb for the space bar.

David Hockney Week

This week in Oak Class we have created our own David Hockney paintings. We had to collage our own person to put in to the pool. But first we had to paint the swimming pool. We learnt about tints and tones then we explore patterns. To create the water effect we used 3 different methods. One was taking your pen for a walk, another was wiggly lines and the last method was wax resist.














In PSHE we have been learning about dental health. We are experts at how to brush our teeth now!!

School Trip

Our new topic this term is Out and About.
We went on a school trip to Rickmansworth Waterways. We went on an old canal boat called the Roger, we spotted different things on out canal boat trip. Rob told us when we got there that there were 3 activities. We had an important rule to follow which was no running. One of the activities was Victorian washing.
The next day in English we used pictures and put them in the right order. We then wrote about our whole day.


In Maths we have been learning about multiplication. These means we have been putting numbers in to groups and in PSHE we have been learning about healthy choices.

First Rehearsals

This week we have started to rehearse our spring play. We are doing well at remembering our lines and singing the songs. Parents and carers please support your child at home with learning lines.


We have also been learning about the sequence of time in Maths and how characters behave in stories.


We have planted some seeds as we had the question....
Does the biggest seed, grow the tallest plant?


On Friday we had our treat afternoon as we had achieved our 5 year 1 stars. We also won Paddington for the most improved attendance

Another week of learning

In English we have been reading the story 'I want my hat back'. We asked questions and we recorded why the bear liked his hat so much. We also spoke about why the rabbit stole the hat.


In Maths we have been learning to subtract. One subtraction is 5 - 2 = 3. Our rule for subtraction sentences, is that you start with the biggest number.


We have been doing some dictation in Guided Reading to help us with our phonics and handwriting.


Science has taken 2 weeks! This is because we have been learning about crystals. A crystal is made when liquid starts off hot and then cools. We made a crystal in the classroom it looked like a flower.

School Trip week

This week we went to St Albans Cathedral on a school trip. When we got back we learnt how to write a letter and we wrote thank you letters in our English sessions.


In Topic we used our William Morris designs to make our printing tile. The prints were fantastic and Mrs Byrne thought they were Year 2 work.


In PSHE we are thinking about staying safe. This week we thought about medicines and liquids.

Lots of writing!

This week Oak Class have been working hard in English. They have produced non-chronological reports about India and written the story of the Three Little pigs. Finally today they had a chance to write their own creative story. Well done Oak Class I was very impressed with the progress you have made in your writing. Mrs Tavender

In Maths we have been looking at numbers. We have been showing different ways to make numbers and finding missing numbers.


Tuesday was Safer Internet Day and we looked at how to stay safe on the internet at  school and at home.


In Science this week we looked at different ways to make bubbles. We thought about fair tests and what solutions worked best and why.

NSPCC Number Day

This week at school we have been learning about India. We learnt facts and then in  English we wrote the facts down so that next week we can write a non-chronological report.


Today has been NSPCC number day. We wore clothes that have numbers on them and we spent some time solving number problems. We have also been learning about money this week and added money together to make a total.


We have also been thinking about people who are important to us and the jobs that people do.

Fantasy Book week

In English this week we have been reading the story Billy's Bucket. The reason why we have been using this story is because we have been learning about fantasy stories. We designed and make our own fantasy settings.
In Maths we have been learning to double a number and find half of a number.
Double 4 is 8
Double 6 is 12


Half of 4 is 2


In Topic we have been learning about our artist William Morris. He made furniture and wallpaper. We recorded facts about him in our own way.

Colour mixing week

This week in English we have been learning about characters in stories. The character we have been looking at is Goldilocks and we wrote a character description. This means we wrote about her personality, her appearance, her likes and dislike and our opinion.


In Art this week we learnt how to mix colours. Blue, red and yellow are primary colours and they make secondary colours.


In PSHE we have been thinking about what makes a good friend. We created posters to show this.


In Maths we have been adding numbers and finding different ways.

Kaleidoscope making week

This week we were practicing our English skill of writing a story. We wrote the story 'My House is Your House'. We wrote the story starting at the beginning and when a character spoke we tried to use speech marks.


In Science we have been making Kaleidoscopes. We had to look in the kaleidoscopes that we made and had to draw the pattern on to a piece of paper. You have to spin the kaleidoscope to make different patterns. You need to shine it at the light because then you can see the patterns better.


Throughout the week we have been practicing writing our capital letters so that we can improve our sentences. Please remember these when you are writing at home!
